After School Maktab

Afterschool Maktab Program: A Comprehensive Islamic Education Program What is a Maktab program? A Maktab program is a comprehensive Islamic education program for public and home school students and is held within the school week. The program generally includes Hifdh (Quran memorization), Islamic Studies, and Arabic language. Students will memorize the Quran with emphasis on makharij (pronunciation) and tajweed (rules of recitation). Under Islamic Studies the student will learn Adaab (manners), Akhlaq (etiquettes), Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), Seerah (the life of the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam)), and Hadith (traditions). The Arabic portion of the program will focus on Quranic Arabic.

The model of a Maktab program has a holistic educational approach where students not only memorize the Quran up to their ability with great retention but will also develop their character, a confident Islamic identity, the ability to understand the Quran, dawah skills, and much more. The importance of a sound Islamic education for all Muslims is evident in today’s society. As Muslim youth are growing up in western societies and attending public schools the development of an Islamic identity is imperative. There is a need to nurture the inherent good that is within the individual so that the emerging generations become the future leaders of the Muslim Ummah (society). In order to do so institutions need to provide comprehensive programs that are built on a taribyyah (education and upbringing) structure – A Maktab program.

While there is some good in weekend schools, their success does not always come through due to the fact that most students do not want to go to a sixth day of school. With a weekday program the students are already in an education mode. At a Maktab program students will spend two hours in their day focusing primarily on their deen (faith) and building their relationship with the Quran. Throughout the week they will focus on the three areas: memorization of Quran, Islamic Studies and Arabic. They will study the Hadith and Seerah of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and learn how he (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) lived and conducted his life and how that applies to them. They will study adaab and akhlaq to build their character. Fiqh will be taught so that they will have an understanding of the rulings of their faith. Through the Arabic portion of the program they will learn 80% of the Quranic words building their understanding of the meaning of the Quran.
