Language Arts
Being a vital tool of communication, the primary goal of the class is to develop speaking, writing and communication skills. The classes for all levels are standards-based. Students learn grammar; spelling words, as well as vocabulary decoding strategies to better understand the meaning of unknown vocabulary words. As students progress through the grades, they are introduced to different types of essay writing in addition to learning parts of speech. Emphasis is placed on practicing and using Standard English for a variety of purposes, as stated by the IL State Goals.

Writing
Students’ work on producing polished pieces of writing by following the procedural steps of writing: Prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Students write personal narratives, friendly letters, descriptive papers, compare-and-contrast papers, expository papers, how-to papers, persuasive pieces, and speeches. As students progress to higher grades, they learn and write research reports, book reports, articles, newsletters, interviews……
Activities: Newsletter (reporting & writing), research papers, summarizing chapter books, writing journals, spelling practices, tests…
Reading
Skills crucial to developing fluent readers such as phonic, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension will be emphasized. Students practice reading by reading chapter books, keeping reading logs, using grade level tests and learning about various literary elements. As students progress through the grades, students will read different types of texts and interpret various literary works.
